Typing on cheap, thin ABS plastic is a fast track to greasy, shiny keys. You want a dense acoustic “thock”, not a hollow, high-pitched rattle. And you definitely don’t want to pay custom-build prices for it. Enter akkogear.

They promise premium acoustics right out of the box. But do the materials actually hold up to daily heavy typing? I put their PBT caps and custom switches under the microscope to see if the build quality justifies the price tag. (Spoiler: The plastic is dense. The software? Not so much.)

When you unbox an Akko board, the weight is the first thing you notice. Even their plastic-cased models feel dense — achieved by packing empty space between the PCB and bottom case with silicone and foam, killing reverberation.

The texture on their dye-sublimated PBT caps has a slight, dry grit — exactly what you want for grip. No sweaty slipping. The switches use standard PC tops and Nylon bottoms for a balanced, deep sound signature.

The Switches: Akko manufactures their own switches with POM stems inside PC or Nylon housings. POM has a naturally low coefficient of friction — switches get smoother with use. Factory lube on the stem rails is surprisingly consistent.

The Plates: Many modern boards use Polycarbonate (PC) or FR4 plates instead of stiff aluminum or brass. PC absorbs bottoming-out impact, reducing finger fatigue during long sessions.
